Georgia Air Guard Unit Awarded
Hunter AAF Recycling Award

Look around before you toss that empty soda can or dump that plastic motor oil container or dispose of that packing material at Hunter Army Airfield near Savannah because a member of the 117th Air Control Squadron of the Georgia Air National Guard might be close behind anxious to snatch up your mess.

Recycling is a major command emphasis for the men and women of the 117th Air Control Squadron at Hunter Army Airfield and the unit's recycling initiatives have garnered the 240-person unit located at Hunter AAF with the Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield's Recycling Award for the third quarter.

The award recognizes the Squadron's aggressive waste minimization and reduction program for pollution prevention.

The Air Guard recycling program recovers reusable material from six product areas and sends to the base recycling center. Included in the recyclable material is motor oil, paper, aluminum other metals, copper, steel and lead, cardboard, and plastics. The recycling program also recovers antifreeze and refrigerants. In additional, daily waste receptacles around the unit are inspected daily to ensure all recyclable waste is recovered.

The award consists of a plaque to recognize the achievement and a $500 award earmarked for the unit fund. Maj. Ron Speir, Jr. 117th ACS Detachment Commander and Tsgts Kevin Smith and Cordell Basemore, 117th Environmental Compliance Officers.
