Air Guardsman Return to Savannah ; Kids Receives Special "Hero" Medals

June 28, 2005 -- Approximately 100 Georgia Air National Guardsmen from the 165th returned to Savannah in late June following a three-month K-2 rotation to Uzbekistan .  The regular rotation of C-130s began approximately a year ago and has continued every 60 days.

As a part of the homecoming ceremonies, children of the deployed 165Air Guardsmen were recognized with a special "Children's' Homefront Hero Medal" from the 165th Family Readiness Group recognizing their contributions as a special  family member of a deployed serviceman.

"The idea, although not original, has generated popularity with unit family members and other Family Readiness Groups  as evidenced by the number of calls we have received about the program," according to Frank Baker, Family Readiness Coordinator for the 165AW.

  • "During deployments, sacrifices are made by both the departing airman and their families," said Baker.  "Often significant sacrifices by the children go unnoticed when dad or mom is not home to be a part of school events or to attend a baseball or soccer games.  It is for the personal sacrifices of the kids that we came up with the Children's Homefront Hero Award" which says we recognize their sacrifice," continued Baker.

The "Children's Homefront Hero Medal, a miniature red, white and blue medal with a small medallion was presented to each child of a returning Guardsman by Col Jesse T. Simmons, acting Commander of the 165AW. On the recent return of the 165th, Simmons and Baker distributed more than 25 individual medals accompanied by an attractive certificate for framing similar to the award citations present to their military parents.

Col Tom Moore, 165AW commander is currently deployed to Uzbekistan as the commander of the 416th Air Expeditionary Group.
