A C-130 Hercules from the Georiga Air National Guard's 165th Airlft Wing in Savannah became the largest airplane to land at the Hilton Head Island Municipal Airport, S.C this week when it participated in exercise Vigilant Guard '08. As a result of the historic landing, the airport is now certified to handle military aircraft of that size.
The aircraft landed at the Hilton Head airport as part of an exercise scenario in which simulated earthquake victims were evacuated from the island and airlifted to Beaufort, S.C. Vigilant Guard is a three-day National Guard-hosted exercise involving more than 3,000 National Guardsmen.
In addtion to the 165th, other Georgia Guard units participating include the 781st Troop Command (CERF-P); Company C, 151st Supply and Service Battalion; 4th Civil Support Team (WMD); and Air National Guard medical assets.
The exercise is designed to better prepare the National Guard for natural disasters in a cooperative effort with various national, state and local government agencies.
