A look at what happened this month in Georgia National Guard history

1945 – This eventful month at the close of World War II was particularly joyful at 7 p.m. on Aug. 14 when President Harry S. Truman formally announced that Japan had surrendered. Eight days earlier on Aug. 6, the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and three days later a second A-bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. An armada from the U. S. Pacific Fleet and some allied ships entered Tokyo Bay at the end of the month, and then 10,000 U.S. Marines made a symbolic landing at air and naval bases guarding the bay's entrance. The formal surrender signing by the Japanese occurred the following month aboard the battleship Missouri.

1954 – Four pilots of the 158th Fighter Bomber Squadron, Georgia Air National Guard and one pilot from the Air Guard's 116th Fighter Bomber Wing, were selected to augment an around-the- clock alert maintained by the U.S. Air Defense Command. This was a new program announced by the Air Force, and it put the Air National Guard into the planning mix for the overall common defense of the nation.

1999 – Two rotations of Monroe's 178th Military Police Company deployed to Fort Clayton, Panama, to conduct area security missions before the Panama Canal Zone was closed. The 178th was the last U. S. Reserve unit to rotate through Panama before the canal transfer. The unit returned home in September.
