A
look at what happened this month in Georgia National
Guard history
1846
– The Mobile Register and Journal of Mobile, Ala., reported
on the 5th the ship William Bradstreet brought to the city three companies of the Georgia Regiment of Volunteers. These men were on their way to the Rio Grande for the Mexican War. The rest of the regiment under the command of Col. Jackson arrived on three other steamers, the Amaranth, the Lowndes and the Eureka. The Georgia companies in the regiment were: the Georgia Light Infantry, the Sumter Volunteers, the Macon Guards, the Columbus Guards, the Richmond Blues, the Canton Volunteers, the Jasper Greens, the Crawford Guards, the Fanin Avengers and the Kansas Rangers.
1975 – Weapons training became mandatory for women enlisting in the Army as of July. Those who enlisted before July 1 were still under the voluntary weapons training program until the end of their enlistment.
1986 –
Teams of Georgia Army and Air National Guardsmen using trucks delivered more than 1,100 tons of hay to distribution points across the state for starving Georgia livestock during "Operation Haylift." The state was experiencing severe drought, and particularly hard hit were the beef and dairy cattlemen. Governor Joe Frank Harris ordered to state active duty an estimated130 Georgia Guardsmen to deliver the hay that had been shipped from Illinois.
