Dobbins Opens Newly Renovated Entrance
The main gate off Cobb Parkway at Marietta's Dobbins Air Reserve Base opened this past week with the employees passing through the newly renovated entrance as early as 6 a.m.
Base officials said the gate would remain open 24 hours.
Gate No. 2, the Lockheed Gate, which has been in use since the main gate was closed, remains open, they said.
The Lockheed gate operates on a 12-hour schedule (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.), Monday thru Friday. It will be closed on all federal holidays. The exception for gate No. 2 is that it will remain open for all primary 94th Airlift Wing drills. The hour of operation for the Lockheed gate during drills is 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays.
Gate also is primarily a commercial gate and all commercial traffic arriving at the main gate will be redirected there.
When accessing the base through the main Gate, motorists traveling north on Cobb Parkway will be able to turn left into the installation. Security officials ask motorists to use extreme caution when making the turn. Even with the protected traffic signal that's been placed there, traffic may not stop as quickly as one may think (or it may not stop at all). Also, remember that the main gate has been closed for quite a while, and local drivers need to get used to it being open again. Even when a motorist has the green light, he should check both ways before entering the intersection. Make no mistake, security officials said, this is an extremely dangerous intersection, and everyone who uses it must proceed with extreme caution going in and out of Dobbins.
As the newly renovated entrance is accepting traffic, the Barclay Gate is now closed, base officials said.
The main gate's new visitors center remains closed. Its opening date is yet to be determined, base officials said, and all Pass and ID operations (i.e., vehicle registration, etc.) continue at the trailer at gate No. 2 for the next few weeks.
Security personnel said Fam-Camp users with large vehicles should utilize the Lockheed gate for access to Dobbins.
