122nd Soldiers Head back to Iraq

Savannah's 122nd Rear Operations Center (Theatre Support Command) is again being called to duty for operations in Southwest Asia. The unit was among Georgia's first Army National Guard units to deploy to Afghanistan in December 2001 and then to return home in October 2002.

The departure ceremony for the 122nd ROC is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, at 10 a.m. in the Seawright Armory on Savannah’s Eisenhower Drive. 

The 23-member unit initially departs South Georgia for its mobilization station at Camp Shelby, Miss., There, it will train until mid-summer before deploying to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

No date has been announced for the unit’s depature for the Middle East.

Once it is “in country,” the 122nd will provide uninterrupted command and control and continuity of support for American forces engaged in combat. Rear operations are characterized by multi-functional units involved in a variety of missions around-the-clock.
