A look at what happened this month in Georgia National Guard history

1832 – Four Georgia militia companies came to a site south of Macon for the first summer military encampment of more than one volunteer unit in the State’s history. Two of the companies that attended were the Macon Volunteers and the Monroe Musketeers. Two years later the Macon Volunteers extended an invitation to all the state’s militia companies for a week long May encampment with enticements such as good board for 75 cents a day and a gold medal for the winner of a shooting competition.

1836 – The 1st Battalion, Georgia Volunteers  mustered out of federal service on May 15 in Florida after serving in the Second Seminole Indian War. The Macon Volunteers, the Hancock Blues, the State Fencibles, the Morgan Guards and the Monroe Musketeers, made up the 1st Battalion commanded by Maj. Mark Cooper. The Macon Volunteers and the Monroe Musketeers arrived back in Macon on May 25 to a salute fired in their honor by the town's citizens.

1846 – The United States declared war against Mexico & with the country officially at war, numerous Georgia Militia companies volunteered their services for that conflict. Though the Macon Volunteers offered their services to the governor before the declaration of war, when the length of the term of service became known, they chose not to enlist. Several members withdrew from the Volunteers to form the Macon Guards specifically for Mexican service. They  mustered into federal service the following month and served just a couple of weeks short of a year.
