America's Revolution,
Georgia Native Americans, Iraq discussed at HSGNG Confab
Georgia's armed forces from the Revolution to Iraq were featured
during the annual Historical Society of the Georgia National Guard
Conference Oct. 22.
Ernie Stewart and his wife Linda, both
re-enactors and Revolutionary War enthusiasts, donned period
clothing to demonstrate how each piece had a purpose. He also argued
that Georgia's role in the revolution was minimal because it was the
youngest colony and hence many settlers still felt loyalty to crown.
Mrs. Stewart explained the role of women -- as camp followers --
during the war.
Lonnie Davis, park ranger at the
Ocmulgee Mounds outside of Macon, discussed Native American
communities in that area and the Yamasee Indian war of the early
19th century.
Maj. Gen. David Poythress, the Adjutant
General of Georgia, opened the conference emphasizing the need for
National Guard support for the Historical Society.
Lt. Col. Ken Baldowski reviewed his
recent media trip to Iraq and the 48th with the group which included
a powerful slide presentation. This is the third mobilization for the 124th, which is
headquartered at the Confederate Ave. complex in Atlanta. The unit
was mobilized for Desert Storm in 1991 and served a tour in Bosnia
in 1997.
