A look at what happened in September in Georgia National Guard history:

1974: Two crews of the Air National Guard's 165th Airlift Wing fly the last C-124 planes in the U.S. Armed Forces to a salvage yard in Arizona. This last official flight for the Globemasters is also the last flight as an active Guardsman for SMSgt Thomas L. Davis before retirement. Davis was known as the last of the survivors of the Bataan Death March in the Philippines in WWII still in uniform.

1999 - Georgia Army and Air National Guardsmen are activated by Gov. Roy Barnes for Hurricane Floyd. One major task was to help with the evacuation from Georgia's coast as well as with relief efforts. The Guard's 165th Airlift Wing is designated to lead the efforts of the Guardsmen.

1917 - Robert Burton, the young Georgia Guardsman highlighted in the last month's "First Friday," and fellow Georgia Guardsmen of the 151st Machine Gun Battalion, leave mobilization camp in Macon for Camp Mills, Hempstead, NY, their last U.S. station prior to departing for the battlefields of France.
