Guard Makes Mark In Use of 'VTC' In Georgia Court

The Georgia Guard had a hand in advancing the use of technology in court recently, when a member of the 48th BCT, testified via two-way video in a Cobb County drug case . . . only SSGT Jonathan Stanley, a police officer in his civilian job, isn’t a member of the brigade’s rear detachment headquartered in Macon, he is stationed with the 1st Battalion, 118th Field Artillery in Taji, Iraq.

This was the first time such video-teleconferencing has been used in a criminal case in Georgia. There were, however, several challenges. Hurricane Katrina which forced Guard technicians to reroute the signal when the Biloxi, Miss., relay station was destroyed.

And, Scott Marshall, director of Instructional Technology at North Georgia College and POC for the Guard's Distant Learning Center there, answered the legal challenge testifying on the diligence and excellence of VTC technology.

During a break in court proceedings, Stanley visited with his wife -- by VTC -- said Kevan Farrell, multi-media integration coordinator for the Georgia Department of Defense.
