September 7, 2004 -- More than 400 members of the Georgia National Guard's 148th Support Battalion arrived in the Ocala, Fl, area on Tuesday to assist in the clean-up in the aftermath of Hurricanes Frances and Charlie.
The unit is assisting the Florida National Guard under an agreement that Georgia has signed with neighboring states to share Guard assets in times of emergency. Currently, more than 5,000 Florida citizen-soldiers are on duty and some nine states other states are providing assistance.
The 148th Support Battalion, which is part of the 48th Brigade Combat Team, is headquartered in Forsyth, and has units located in Dublin, Hinesville and Eastman. The unit deployed with more than 170 vehicles and is expecting to be on duty in north-central Florida for up to two weeks.
In addition to the Support Battalion, members of the Georgia Air National Guard's 283rd Combat Communications Squadron from Dobbins Air Reserve Base have also been called to assist in Florida. The 283rd provides stat-of-the-art communications capabilities.
Nearly 20 other members of the 48th Brigade are assisting law enforcement officials in the Valdosta area where thousands of evacuees from Florida are staying.
