Georgia high school scholars earn Georgia Military Scholarships

More than 20 Georgia high school seniors were awarded the full four-year scholarships to North Georgia College presented by the Georgia National Guard, North Georgia College and State University and the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC), the state agency that administers the scholarships.

For more than a quarter-century the North Georgia Scholarship has been presented to qualified Georgia students. To date, more than 600 students have benefited from the program and the total cash value of the awards is more than $10 million. The recipients for the scholarship were chosen from among applicants statewide.

On hand to present the award was Governor Sonny Perdue who was joined by State Sen. John Douglas, himself a North Georgia Graduate. Douglas, thanked them for joining the Guard and picking up the challenge of some day becoming the Guards newest crop of officers.

Later, during a reception for the students and their parents at the James H. "Sloppy" Floyd Building across from the capitol, Maj. Gen., Larry H. Ross, assistant adjutant general for Defense Support of Civil Authorities, added his sentiments to those of Perdue and Douglas. “The step you have taken in deciding to attend North Georgia and become part of the Corps of Cadets says much about your spirit and dedication, not only to your selves, but to your state and to your nation, Ross said. I look forward to seeing each of you some day pin on you gold second lieutenants bars, and becoming leaders in our great organization.

To be eligible for the award, the student had to be nominated by a member of the General Assembly and have a high school grade point average of at least 3.0 and a SAT score of over 1000.
